Automotive Preventative care CARS Wellington UT

Preventative care =What's in a service check up?

If you're interested in extending the life of your vehicle as much as possible and keeping more cash in your pocket, it's wise to perform preventative care items such as oil changes and tune-ups. But what exactly is a tune-up these days?
Automobiles have become increasingly dependent on computers to run most or all of their systems such as ignition, engine performance, fuel injection and electronics. During any tune-up, a reputable mechanic will want to scan the computer for any codes that may indicate an error and check the ignition system.
  1.  Present-day tune-up at CARS should include an inspection of the vehicle’s spark plugs to see if they need to be replaced. The same goes for the spark plug wires. The vehicle’s air filter and fuel filter should also be inspected and replaced if necessary. For most vehicles, these preventative care tune-ups and inspections should start at about 60,000 miles and then be checked again at 20,000-mile intervals thereafter. This is a big change from older, more mechanically driven cars that required technicians to change the points and distributor cap as well as adjusting the carburetor, ignition point settings and timing every few thousand miles. The reliance on computers to monitor these automotive systems has now required technicians to be proficient computer software and scanning machines in order to diagnose issues.
  2. Something to be aware of also, is that if you are experiencing a performance problem like chugging or slow acceleration, it may not be related to a need for a tune-up, but a symptom of the emissions system, such as a blocked catalytic convertor, or the fuel delivery system, such as a clogged fuel injector. Take it to CARS = complete auto repair service and describe the problem so they can diagnose what the car needs
  3. One final note for drivers is to be aware that when you visit CARS repair shop and request a tune-up, this does not necessarily include an oil change or other fluid changes.  Oil changes should be done more frequently than tune-ups,  but that schedule is being extended as well to about every 5,000 to 7,500 miles - depending on the vehicle, engine size and driving - due to cleaner running engines and synthetically blended oils. Keep track of your mileage and consult with you mechanic, don't necessarily rely on the change oil light on the dash.
In any case, be sure to get an estimate for all work that is suggested and that you understand why the technician is recommending it. Working together with your trusted Mechanic, you can be reassured that you are safe on the road and keep your car running trouble-free!

Oxygen Sensor in Wellington UT at CARS

Oxygen Sensors measure the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases and send a signal to the Engine Control Unit (ECU). The ECU monitors the signal and accordingly adjusts the amount of fuel entering the engine, keeping the air-fuel ratio closer to stoichiometric ratio. Thus, an Oxygen Sensor optimizes the performance and fuel efficiency and minimizes emissions.
High oxygen content in the exhaust gas indicates a lean mixture which affects performance and causes problems like knocking, misfire and may also damage the engine. Low oxygen content indicates a rich mixture which causes excess emissions and reduces the fuel economy.
How many Oxygen Sensors are there in my vehicle and where they are located?
The number of oxygen sensor depends on the car make, model and mainly on the size and type of the engine. It also depends on the type of the OBD sensor: OBD-I or OBD-II.
In most cases, there are two oxygen sensors in a four cylinder engine. One is located on the exhaust manifold before the catalytic converter and another is located after the catalytic converter on the exhaust pipe. In V6 or V8 engines there are four oxygen sensors, two O2 sensors are located before catalytic converter on each cylinder bank and other two O2 sensors are located after catalytic converter on respective banks.
How Does the Oxygen Sensor Work?
An Oxygen sensor is installed in such a way that one of its surfaces is in contact with the exhaust gas flow and another surface with the outside air. Oxygen sensors do not measure the concentration of the oxygen gas in the exhaust gas, but measure the difference between the amount of oxygen in the exhaust and in outside air.
Based on the oxygen quantity in exhaust gases, voltage signals are provided constantly to the ECU so that it can maintain a stoichiometric air fuel ratio by regulating the fuel injection.
What are Upstream Oxygen Sensors and Downstream Oxygen Sensors?
The upstream oxygen sensor is located right before the catalytic converter. It is installed in the exhaust manifold or in the exhaust pipe near the engine. The role of the upstream oxygen sensor is to optimize the air-fuel ratio entering the engine. There can be one or two oxygen sensors depending on the number of cylinders.
Upstream monitors the oxygen gas in the exhaust gas and provides a signal to the ECU whether the mixture is weak or rich. When there is a high level of oxygen in the exhaust gas, ECU assumes that the air-fuel mixture is lean - so it adds more fuel to the engine. And when there is low oxygen in the in the exhaust, the ECU assumes that the air-fuel mixture is rich and it reduces the fuel supply accordingly.
The downstream oxygen sensor is located in the exhaust pipe after the catalytic converter. The role of the downstream oxygen sensor is to monitor the working and efficiency of the catalytic converter. There may be one or two oxygen sensors depending on the number of cylinders.
The ECU compares the signal from upstream and downstream sensors. If the catalytic convertor is working properly, the amount of oxygen after the catalytic converter should be near to the specified constant value.
If the signal from the downstream sensor varies from the constant value, this tells you that the catalytic converter is not working properly. Hence, the ECU switch on the ‘CHECK ENGINE’ light on the dash.
Why and How Often should I change my Oxygen Sensor?
Oxygen sensors play an important role in both fuel efficiency and engine performance. If Oxygen Sensors are not performing well, it leads to lowered performance of the engine and poor fuel efficiency which ultimately decreases your vehicle's drivability. Hence, it is of utmost importance to keep the Oxygen Sensors up to the mark for the longevity of your vehicle and to receive efficient performance from it.
Every vehicle manufacturer has different recommendations on how often the oxygen sensor should be changed. It is specified at the beginning in terms of mileage or time period depending upon expected day to day use of the vehicle. However, it is strongly advised to get it checked at regular intervals as it depends upon gas-containment, as well as local weather.
How do I know that my Oxygen Sensor is not working properly?
There is no particular symptom that indicates malfunctioning of Oxygen Sensors. One case would be drastic decrease of fuel economy or mileage.   Also, you need to check your Oxygen Sensors if the engine is not responding quickly or showing less power while running. Other reasons may include engine hesitation, engine stalling, increased exhaust emission, rough idling and engine pinning.
What are possible causes of Oxygen sensors to be damaged?
Your car's Oxygen Sensor can get damaged from the following
■By incorrect use of silicone gasket sealers.
■Oil deposits on the outer surface.
■By Antifreeze
■If the engine runs on a rich air-fuel mixture for a long time
■By natural aging or accident shocks.

Owning a Jeep In Utah

Things you should do when owning a JEEP

#1 – Find a good auto mechanic.
Jeeps are dependable,  they are. It’s just that having work done on this type of rig requires considerable knowledge and expertise — particularly for older, manual models.
Plus, as the owner of a sport vehicle, I can assure you that regular maintenance and upkeep are now part of your future.

#2 – Eliminate the death wobble.
Although the attention-grabbing name (death wobble) may be a little overly dramatic, any Jeep — and, really any 4×4 — is likely to wobble at certain speeds, thereby causing a potentially dangerous situation in terms of rollover potential.
This wobbling, which occurs because of vibration in the front wheels, typically is the result of an overloaded front suspension system.  There are lot of special parts and add-ons when it comes to Jeeps. These components — such as lift kits or big tires — can easily throw off alignment.   It’s important to make sure that any stock parts are bolted down correctly and not interfering with the streamlining of your system.

#3 – Learn the Jeep wave.
As a Jeep owner, you’re part of a special club.
People who drive Jeeps consider themselves a unique band of adventurers who enjoy all things about this classic American car.   One of the most basic ways to recognize and show respect and solidarity among drivers on the road is through the Jeep wave (yes, there really is such a thing) — which involves a specific hand gesture to a Jeep driver passing you on the other side of the road.

#4 –Relax and have fun.
This  may go without saying, but you’d be surprised at how many Jeep owners garage their rigs or treat them as trophy vehicles — thereby missing out on the true fun of owning this type of ride.
Go out and have fun,  there is mud Bogging,  Rock claiming, camping, snow run,  Geocaching , Moab, Jeep Jamboree USA and much more.
That's how we JEEP   CARS Complete Auto Repair Service

How to Communicate to Auto Repair Shop - UT

How is your Communication Between your Auto Repair shop?
The following tips should help you along the way:
  • Do your homework before taking your vehicle in for repairs of service.
  • Read the owner's manual to learn about the vehicle's systems and components.
  • Follow the recommended service schedules.
  • Keep a log of a ll repairs and service.
You know your car.
You drive it everyday & know how it feels and sounds when everything is right.  So don't ignore it s warning signals.  Use all your senses to inspect your car frequently.
Check for:
  • Unusual sounds, odors, drips, leaks, smoke, warning lights, gauge readings.
  • Changes in acceleration, engine performance, gas mileage, fluid levels.
  • Worn tires, belts, and hoses.
  • Problems in handling, braking, steering, vibrations.
Note when the problem occurs:
  • Is it constant or periodic?
  • Is it when your vehicle is cold or is it after the engine is warmed up?
  • It it at all speeds?  Only under acceleration? During braking?  When shifting?
  • When did the problem first start?
  • Write the symptoms down to give or tell the technician.
Communication is important between you and your auto repair shop.  You should be prepared to describe the symptoms.  ( In larger shops you will probably speak with a service writer/manager rather than the technician.)
Resist the temptation to suggest a course of repair.  Just as you would do with your physician,  tell where it hurts and how long so that the technician can diagnose and recommend a remedy.
Ask for explanations in layman's terms if you don't understand.
Don't rush the technician to make an on the spot diagnosis.
Before you leave, make sure you understand all the shop policies regarding labor rates, guarantees, & acceptable methods of payment.
Last but not least,  Leave a phone number where you can be called.
Safe Travels to you from

Check Engine Light Carbon County Automotive Utah

Check Engine Light -
What the light means and what to do if it comes on.
What The Light Means
      1) Onboard Diagnostics (OBD)
          A)  This controls and monitors your vehicle performance - such as engine speed,  (RPM)
fuel mixture, ignition timing. The computer also tells the automatic transmission when to shift.
          B)  When the computer finds a problem it can't correct, it turns on a light that is labeled

                 "engine, or Service engine"
        C)  When the light come on the computer has stored a "trouble code" in its memory that
that identifies the source of the problem. (such as - malfunctioning sensor or a
               misfiring engine.

D)   This is then read with an electronic scan tool or a Diagnostic computer.

What to do
If the 'check engine" light comes on it will either blink or remain constant, depending on the problem.  But it means it is time to get your car/truck checked.

1 In late - model cars it usually indicates a misfire that can be burning up your fuel dumping it into your exhaust system.( Have car or truck looked at a.s.a.p.)
*This can quickly damage your catalytic converter- requiring expensive repair.
     2) If the light is steady - Just schedule and appointment  - not usually an emergency.

Today's automotive computers often try to compensate when there's a problem; so you may not notice deterioration in performance, even though your fuel mileage is suffering and your vehicle is emitting levels
of hydrocarbons & pollutants.

Tips if you Check Engine Light Comes On
     1) Check your dashboard lights / gauges for
           A)     Low oil pressure
           B)     Overheating
These conditions mean you should pull over and shut off the engine a.s.a.p. in a safe
                      place.
On most cars - Yellow "check engine" means investigate - giving you time to
                             investigate and schedule an appointment.
          C)     Try tightening your gas cap. ( keep in mind, it may take several trips before the light
                    resets.
          D)     Reduce speed and load.  If  the 'check engine" light is blinking or you notice any serious
*Performance problems, such as a loss of power, reduced speed.  Reduce your speed & try to reduce the load ( if your towing a trailer) on the engine.  ( make an apt. to have code read)

          E)      This is not the time to get a state emissions test. (Which should be eliminated in 2013) It will most likely fail.

The best advice is to read your owner's manual beforehand and learn the purpose of the "check engine" light and every other gauge and warning indicator on your dashboard.

Checking the CV Joint should be part of your Regular Maintenance .
CV Joint Failure
Constant velocity joints (CV joints) are found on many cars and even some trucks. Though vehicle manufacturers are reintroducing rear-wheel drive on more new cars, over 80 percent of all the cars on the road today are front-wheel-drive, and every one has four CV joints. The outer CV joints are usually the ones that most often need to be replaced. There are two reasons, one is that the outer CV joints wear more than the inner CV joints, The outer boots on the outer joints are more apt to fail than the ones on the inner joints. CV Joint boot failure is bad news for any CV joint because it dooms the joint to premature failure. A spit, cracked loose or torn boot will throw grease, draining the joint of its vital fluids = lubricants. Sooner or later the joint will run out of Lubricant, which is a bad thing for the metal-to-metal surfaces. They must withstand height pressure loads and constant friction. A boot that doesn’t seal can also allow outside contaminants, such as road splash and dirt, to enter the joint and havoc havoc on its precision machined and polished surfaces. If the boot problem isn’t discovered almost immediately, joint failure will usually follow within a few thousand miles.

Some symptoms of CV Joint failure:

1) Popping or clicking noises when turning.2) A clunk sound when accelerating, decelerating or when putting the car into drive.3) A vibration or shudder when accelerating. 4) A growling or humming noise.
